- U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit judge from 1961 to 1972 and U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia judge from 1947 to 1961. A supporter of segregation, Bryan presided over Davis v. County School Board of Prince Edward County in 1952. He would narrowly interpret the desegregation implementation decree.
