- As a nineteen year-old University of Minnesota student, Baum participated in the June 11, 1961 Freedom Ride via Greyhound from Nashville, Tennessee to Jackson, Mississippi. He also participated in Freedom Ride efforts in Monroe, North Carolina from August 17 to September 1, 1961.
