- Biography:
- segregationist, member of the Virginia House of Delegates (1930-1934), the Senate of Virginia (1934-1950), and governor of Virginia (1950-1954). In November 1957, Eisenhower appointed Battle to the new U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. Battle resigned from the commission in October 1959.
