Ackerberg, a twenty-two-year-old Antioch College student and resident of Riverdale, the Bronx, New York, rode a Greyhound bus from Montgomery, Alabama to Jackson, Mississippi on a May 24, 1961 Freedom Ride. He was arrested the following day in Jackson, Mississippi for his participation.
