Description
Issue 8, June 2006, of the quarterly journal, History Now; American History Online.
"In this issue, we focus on the modern movement to complete the quest for African American equality: the civil rights movement. The essays ... explore the historical context in which the movement arose and flourished; the social factors that determined its successes and failures; the anonymous activists who sustained the struggle; and the cultural contributions of the movement." Essays include Different Perspectives on the Civil Rights Movements by Anthony Badger, "People Get Ready": Music and the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s by Brian Ward, A Local and National Story: the Civil Rights Movement in Post-War Washington, D.C. by Wendell Pritchett, African-American Religious Leadership and the Civil Rights Movement by Clarence Taylor, and The Civil Rights Movement: Major Events and Legacies by James Patterson. Also included in the "From the Teacher's Desk" section are lesson plans for high school, middle school and elementary school levels prepared by experienced teachers. An interactive feature consists of "a jukebox of protest songs."
The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata.
