- Description:
- In this WSB newsfilm clip, Herman Talmadge, United States senator from Georgia, speaks from the Senate floor in Washington, D.C., on August 3, 1962 about the rights of citizens, stating that majorities--not just minorities--have rights. He argues that "mob action whether violent or so-called nonviolent cannot be condoned if constitutional government is to be preserved. There can be no compromise with those who preach and practice it without creating anarchy." Talmadge charges civil rights activists in Albany of damaging the United States in foreign affairs and causing racial strife. He accuses the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), a nonviolent organization opposing segregation, and allied organizations, of playing into the hands of the Communists through their actions in Albany; he asserts that nine members of CORE's leadership had "affiliation or identification with subversive groups and activities."
