- Description:
- Nine page report prepared by Isaiah DeQuincey Newman, field secretary of the South Carolina Conference, NAACP, dated August 1- October 8, 1967. The report begins with a summary of meetings, investigations, speaking engagements, correspondence, and travel. This is followed by the presentation of a series of plans developed for the forecasting and prevention of riots, part of a national directive initiated by NAACP president Roy Wilkins. The riot prevention proposals include a series of recommended actions for NAACP branches and youth councils; law enforcement organizations; and officials from state, county, and municipal agencies. These recommendations were presented to South Carolina governor Robert E. McNair in a meeting; it was agreed to create a statewide voluntary task force to address the problem. Members of the task force are listed in the report. This is followed by a list of highlighted civil rights events and crises across the state.
