- As an introduction to the Civil Rights Movement, students will divide into pairs or small groups and analyze the picture. What do you notice about the marchers? How are they dressed? Facial expressions? What do they have with them? Then, as a whole group, students will answer the following questions: "Why was it important for marchers to carry the American flag at the front?" and "Why was it important for the marchers to dress as they did?" in a Socratic Seminar.
