In December, 1935 Joseph Shoemaker and Eugene Poulnot, two Tampa labor organizers with ties to the Socialist Party, were kidnaped, torture, and tarred and feathered by Tampa city police in co-operation with the KKK. Shoemaker, who was also castrated, eventually died from his injuries. Though a number of Klansmen were apprehended in the case, no one was ever prosecuted fro Shoemaker's murder. This pamphlet, written to draw attention to the facts of the case, was co-authored by members of the Committee for the Defense of Civil Rights in Tampa, whose Chairman was Socialist Party presidential candidate.
