The report lists the Standing Committee of chairmen of the State Conference, and the organizational structure of the State Youth Conference. The report contains income and expenses statements for the year, and names the honorees of the Emancipation Proclamation Centennial Celebration. Activity for the year also included the Centennial Voter Registration Drive, which established a goal of 1000 new registered voters for each year since the issuance of the Emancipation was established. A \"Summit Meeting\" of NAACP branch and Youth Council leaders was held on June 5, their objective being to end all state imposed racial segregation and discrimination. Advancements in desegregation in the state include the enrollment of Harvey Gantt at Clemson College and Henri Monteith, Robert G. Anderson, James L. Solomon and Marine Sgt. Herbert Morris at the University of South Carolina. The report includes efforts in elementary school desegregation and the voluntary desegregation of drug stores, variety stores and restaurants in Spartanburg, SC, in an effort to avoid mass demonstrations. It also details integration around the state within libraries, churches, and lunch counters, and direct action in the form of mass demonstrations in Charleston, Sumter and Orangeburg. It details the forms of direct action that have taken place in Charleston, and notes that picketing has been the most effective. It concludes with summaries of mass meetings, arrests, and financing.","The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata."],"dc_format":null,"dcterms_identifier":["pne63uu"],"dcterms_language":["eng"],"dcterms_publisher":null,"dc_relation":["Forms part of online collection: Isaiah De Quincey Newman (1911-1985) Papers, 1929-2003."],"dc_right":["http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/CNE/1.0/"],"dcterms_is_part_of":["Folder: Newman, Top., NAACP, Reports, 1962, Aug. 20 - Feb. 5, 1964, Isaiah DeQuincey Newman Papers, South Carolina Political Collections, The University of South Carolina Libraries"],"dcterms_subject":["Segregation--United States--South Carolina","African Americans--Economic conditions--South Carolina","African Americans--Civil rights--South Carolina","African Americans--Segregation--South Carolina","National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
