Tuttle of the fifth circuit court of appeals to readmit the students as a confirmation of the \"justice and morality of this movement.\"","While the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights (ACMHR) led civil rights efforts in Birmingham for several years, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) began assisting with concentrated actions against segregation on April 3, 1963. During the first weeks of May, over one thousand student demonstrators, some as young as six-years-old, participated in mass marches labeled the Children's Crusade and were arrested. On May 20 the Birmingham Board of Education ordered that arrested students sixteen-years-old and under be suspended from school and those over sixteen be expelled.
