J. C. Lawson was a farmer, minister, teacher, and school principal, and he was the first person in Lowndes County to pass the literacy test that had been required for voter registration. Because Lawson was partially blind he walked with a cane (white with a red tip), which he is carrying in this photograph. Mattie Kate and Rosie Mallard (sisters-in-law) are standing in line in front of the Lawson family.
