In 1953, Butts joined the U.S. Army and after he completed his tour of duty he went on to earn his B.S. degree in political science in 1957.He received his Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University and went on to teach at Mississippi Valley State and Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi. Marx at the University of Southern Mississippi Campus in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.Marx was born on November 23, 1932 in McComb, Mississippi.After serving in the United States Air Force, he joined the Mississippi Highway Patrol at the age of twenty-five.While working as a patrolman, Marx attended law school and was appointed attorney for the highway patrol.After he retired from the patrol, he took a position teaching Criminal Justice at the University of Southern Mississippi.Marx was in the center of the long and difficult civil rights struggle.
