After school and military service, he started working at Encyclopedia Britannica. It was through this job that he moved to Chicago where he met Hjordis. In the mid-1960s, the couple purchased a house on North Lincoln Park Avenue West. From this vantage point, they experienced the riots related to the Democratic National Convention. Each night, shortly after 11:00 pm, the couple would look at Lincoln Park and the streets around their home to see Chicago police officers \"taking pride\" in clobbering people on the heads as they cleared people from the park. At one point Mr. Garner remembers hearing a policeman say with humor, \"Leave your wounded behind. After the violence outside of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) Wednesday night, Ms. Rategan headed to Lincoln Park but did not make it because of a near-miss encounter with police. She recalls her own disillusionment with police during the time of the DNC. He described a typical middle class upbringing in a household that was not political. Mr. Fitzgerald recounts extensive involvement in the Civil Rights Movement; he registered voters in Alabama and participated in the Selma March. In 1968, he was newly married and preparing for the bar or legal examination. He described his interaction with the convention and events surrounding it as being somewhat distant. He and his wife would visit Grant and Lincoln parks during the day, talk to people, and head home in the evening. After he became aware of what was happening, he phoned a cousin to pick him up and drive him to his residence in the Pilsen neighborhood. Ms. Kirby's Irish Roman Catholic family was very involved in politics. Her father was an attorney, and her mother was an active member of the Democratic Party. Her mother eventually became the Democratic Committeewoman for Lake County Illinois. In 1968, Kirby, a senior at Cabrini College in Pennsylvania, was home for the summer and attended events in both Lincoln and Grant parks related to the Democratic National Convention (DNC). She traveled to Chicago from Waukegan for three days. After seeing the number of military and police personnel, however, she did not participate in the violent demonstrations that took place outside the Conrad Hilton Hotel. Working as a beat officer for the Chicago Police Department, personnel from his district were transported to Grant Park for crowd control. Though he did witness a lot of tension and some violence inflicted by officers, he recalled that his captain gave an order to not swing any batons and that his district managed to escape the ordeal with few incidents.
