Born in 1958, Ms. Taylor remembered a neighborhood with businesses along Madison Street, including theaters, car dealerships, grocery stores, restaurants, and Black-owned businesses. She described the unrest of 1968 and the neighborhood abandonment that followed. His family relocated to Chicago in 1958 when he was seventeen years old. After working as a launderer and cleaner, Reverend Simpson became the second pastor at Mount Ridge Missionary Baptist Church in East Garfield Park, where he's been for forty-one years. He came from a ten child family of tenant farmers who eventually moved to Chicago as part of the Great Migration. He was drafted into the military as a young man after college and acquired a certain level of discipline that impacted how he worked as an executive for three major companies. Mr. Braxton became active in Lawndale sometime in the late 1990s. He started working in social service organizations as a mentor and counselor. When he moved to Lawndale, he also became active as a board member of some local organizations. His family moved to Chicago's North Lawndale neighborhood in 1966. Mr. Dotson also described experiencing police harassment during his time at Farragut High School. His family later moved back to Chicago before his high school years. Reverend Morris Jr. worked at Marillac House, a social services provider for families in East Garfield Park. There he worked during the unrest after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination. He recalls growing up on a small farm in South Georgia where his parents were sharecroppers. He left school after the 8th grade to help on the farm, then worked briefly for a moving and storage company before being drafted in 1961. His basic training was abbreviated because of the need for soldiers during the Berlin Crisis. His first duty was in transportation, serving as a driver for VIP guests at Fort Knox. He recalls in detail hearing about the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963. He attended OCS and describes his tour in Vietnam during the 1968 Tet Offensive. In a later duty assignment in Korea, he served as Race Relations Officer and describes in detail some of the racial problems experienced by the military at that time as well as the rampant drug use there. He comments on President Johnson's \"Project 100,000\" and recalls early issues with recruiting after the end of the draft.
