In 1932, he completed his undergraduate degree from Alcorn College (now Alcorn State University).He earned a Master's degree from Cornell University and then went on to study at New York University.Burger taught mathematics at Magnolia, Mississippi from 1934 to 1936.He served as principal at Hopewell Vocational School in Covington County from 1936 to 1940.Until his retirement in 1974, Burger served as principal at Eureka High School (later Rowan High School).He was very active in his community through his work with various organizations such as the Hattiesburg Business Development Council, the Mississippi Principals Association, and the Resolutions Committee of the National Teachers Association.
