As the story is listened to or read aloud, ask the strategic questions in the attached pdf. After reading, revisit some of the questions and discuss the character traits of Mason on an anchor chart. For more background information and if time is available you can read the interview attached with the author's father, who was the basis for the story. Next go back to the pictures you showed in the opening and now bring out the primary source photos from 1963. Give background information on the photos...students integrating Alabama schools for hte first time. Now analyze the difference between the photos and using the knowledge of Mason in the book, complete a character analysis of either the boy Sonnie Hereford IV, 6 or Dorothy Bridget Davis, 16, and Henry Hobdy, 17. Compare and contrast the photos of today and of 1960s.
