Dr. Burgess was the first African-American teacher to receive the South Carolina Teacher of the Year Award. Agnes Hildebrand Wilson Burgess, an educator, was born in 1914 in Chapin, South Carolina, to Rev. Benjamin Franklin Hildebrand Sr. and Agnes Brogdon. Twice widowed, Dr. Burgess passed away October 6, 2012. Tom Crosby interviewed Agnes Burgess at her home on January 18, 2007.
