He also discusses the potency of race in political campaigns, highlighting the 1950 Frank Graham-Willis Smith Senate race and his 1960 gubernatorial campaign against I. Beverly Lake. Sanford contends that racially charged campaigns often determined the direction and fate of politicians' careers. His work with established Democratic Party organizations taught him important lessons on how to divert the public's attention from racial matters to other campaign issues.","Sanford explains that North Carolina did not support machine politics, although the state was dominated by the Democratic Party for nearly a century. Bert Bennett's integral role as political campaigner helped ensure Democratic rule over the state. However, as the Republican Party began to challenge the Democratic Party, North Carolina's one-party system was abandoned. Sanford asserts that the realignment of political parties was able to occur because unfavorable public memories about Republicans faded and internal fighting among Democrats increased. With his 1972 presidential bid, Sanford realized that Republican use of conservative political ideology and rhetoric heavily influenced the future of North Carolina politics. Sanford contends that southern distinctiveness no longer divides the nation, as ideology replaced race as important campaign issues in the 1970s. Sanford finishes the interview by emphasizing the importance of ethics and credibility in political campaigns. He describes Jackson's kindness and generosity and tells a story about how cruel Jackson's husband, Minters Galloway, could be towards her – 4:34. Bostic and Goreau discuss John Hammond's \"sour\" attitude towards Jackson and an unfavorable Rolling Stone article he wrote about her – 15:38. He finishes by describing Jackson's magnificent appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival with John and Jackie Kennedy in attendance – 21:00. [26:05-1:01:05] Speaking from his New York apartment Brother John Sellers describes Jackson becoming sick in NYC where she was performing in the Salute to Black Women concert and having to be admitted to the hospital. Minters Galloway treated her callously at this time even though Jackson was planning to remarry him – 26:24. Sellers discusses the last time he spoke to Jackson shortly before she entered the hospital for a minor surgery – 28:21. He mentions that he had agreed to come see Jackson but was delayed and she passed away before he could get to her – 32:47. Sellers and Goreau discuss different places Jackson lived in Chicago and romantic relationships that she had over the years, including her marriage to Ike. They also discuss different musicians that she played with early in her career. Goreau and Sellers spend several minutes informally sharing interesting anecdotes about experiences with Jackson, including a particular Christmas, long drives to shows, and Jackson's first appearance in Washington D.C. – 40:55. They discuss several of Jackson's memorable appearances as well as her experiences and problems with assorted promoters and booking agents – 50:36. Sellers discusses Jackson's rift with John Hammond – 58:40. He describes how Thomas Dorsey first called Jackson \"the Empress of gospel singers,\" and the beginnings of their relationship – 25:29. He speaks about the founding and foreground of the SCLC, the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and Jackson's role in it. Rev. Abernathy speaks about the beginnings of his relationship with Dr. King – 14:01 and goes on to describe the atmosphere of his neighborhood and home, providing context to the violence he faced and the bombing that occurred there in 1956 – 16:14. They speak about Jackson's contributions to the founding of SCLC and her ideas for organizing the Black community, especially in Chicago – 23:11, referencing the Rally for Civil Rights that she helped organize at Soldier Field – 31:36. He goes on to discuss the attack on the march in Gage Park, Chicago in 1966, recalling Jackson as both a comforting presence and a useful contact between SCLC and Chicago politicians – 35:31.
