He also gives details about his experience in the famous march from Selma to Montgomery in 1965.","Finding aid available in repository.","John Robert Lewis was born February 21, 1940 in Troy, Alabama. He graduated from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he became a leader in the Nashville sit-ins. While a student he was invited to participate in non-violence workshops in the basement of Clark Memorial United Methodist Church, and he later participated in the Freedom Rides. From 1963 to 1966, Lewis served as chairmen of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Along with Martin Luther King, Jr., he spoke at the August 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. In 1964 he helped coordinate the \"Freedom Summer\" in Mississippi, a campaign to register black voters across the South. Lewis was a leader in the 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery, where, in Selma, he and other marchers were beaten and dispersed with tear gas by state troopers and deputized white citizens. The event, which came to be known as \"Bloody Sunday,\" helped inspire the passage of the Voting Rights Act later that year. Lewis entered the political arena in 1981 when he earned a seat on the Atlanta City Council. In 1986 he successfully ran for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. As a student of all-black Morehouse College in Atlanta, Bond began his commitment to the civil rights movement when he helped to organize the Committee on the Appeal for Human Rights. In 1960 Bond helped to form the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), a student organization that provided grassroots support for civil rights in local communities. Bond served as communications director of SNCC, editing its protest magazine The Atlanta Inquirer. In 1965 he won a seat to the Georgia legislature, but was denied his seat because of his outspoken opposition to the Vietnam War. Bond would be elected by his district and denied a seat a total of three times before the U.S. Supreme Court declared the actions of the Georgia House unconstitutional. Bond took his seat in the House in 1967 and served there until 1974, when he was elected to the Georgia senate. Around this time, Bond served as president of the Southern Poverty Law Center, a civil rights law firm. As senator, Bond became the first African-American chair of the Fulton County delegation and chaired the Committee on Consumer Affairs. In 1971 he led a voter registration drives in the predominately black communities of Georgia. Bond retired from the senate in 1986 to run for the U.S. Congress, but lost to longtime friend and fellow civil rights activist John Lewis. McDonald reflects on current voting methods and discusses sections 2 and 5 of the Voting Rights Act. He discusses reapportionment, gerrymandering, and voting ID requirements. McDonald reflects on the origin of his inspirations, his book Voting Rights Odyssey and the legacy of struggle for rights.","Laughlin McDonald has been director of the Atlanta-based Voting Rights Project of the American Civil Liberties Union since 1972. Prior to that he was in private practice and taught at the University of North Carolina Law School. He has represented racial and language minorities in numerous discrimination cases and specialized in the area of voting rights. He has argued cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, testified frequently before Congress, and written for scholarly and popular publications on civil liberties issues. His most recent books are A Voting Rights Odyssey: Black Enfranchisement in Georgia, and American Indians and the Fight for Equal Voting Rights. He is a South Carolina native, received a B.A. from Columbia University in 1960, and a LL.
