Church in Jackson, Tennessee.","John Robert Lewis (1940-2020) was a civil rights leader and politician. He served as the chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) from 1963 to 1966 during the height of the Civil Rights Movement. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1986, becoming only the second African American to represent Georgia in Congress since Reconstruction. In 1965 he was elected to the Georgia Legislature, but was denied the seat because of his outspoken opposition to the Vietnam War. He was finally sworn into office in 1967, and served until 1974. He served in the Georgia Senate from 1975-1986.
