It was developed through a partnership of the Alabama Humanities Foundation and Auburn University and with the generous financial support of its founding sponsors. EOA offers articles written or adapted specifically for it and, when possible, enhanced with multimedia content. New content is added to the site regularly. The Alabama Humanities Foundation holds the copyright to EOA's original content in trust for the citizens of Alabama. EOA is a collaborative effort involving many individuals and organizations. EOA authors come from all areas of scholarship and range from scholars at academic institutions to scientists out in the field. The multimedia content that makes EOA a dynamic educational tool is made possible by the generosity of organizational partners that have shared their collections and archives with the project. EOA's mission is to present trustworthy and authoritative information on a wide range of topics. Its editors believe that in order to be credible EOA must strike a balance between celebration and condemnation. Alabama's problems are not glossed over, nor are its accomplishments and successes overlooked. Rich and poor; educated and illiterate; Confederate and Unionist; planter and slave; male and female--Alabamians of all stripes--have contributed to the development of the state, and EOA endeavors to present all these stories.","The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata."],"dc_format":null,"dcterms_identifier":null,"dcterms_language":["eng"],"dcterms_publisher":null,"dc_relation":null,"dc_right":["http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"dcterms_is_part_of":null,"dcterms_subject":["African American civic leaders--Alabama","African American civil rights workers--Alabama","African American clergy--Alabama","African American college students--Alabama","African American judges--Alabama","African American lawyers--Alabama","African Americans--Alabama","African Americans--Civil rights--Alabama","African Americans--Education--Alabama","African Americans--Politics and government","African Americans--Segregation--Alabama","African Americans--Violence against","Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights","Alabama--Politics and government","Alabama--Race relations--History--20th century","Birmingham (Ala.)--Race relations--History--20th century","Black Panther Party","Boycotts--Alabama--Montgomery","Christians--Alabama--Birmingham--Political activity","Civic leaders--Alabama","Civil rights demonstrations--Alabama","Civil rights movements--Alabama","Civil rights workers--Alabama","Civil rights--Alabama","Clergy--Alabama","College integration--Alabama","Democratic Party (Alabama)","Direct action--Alabama","Freedom Rides, 1961","Judges--United States","Ku Klux Klan (1915- )","Lawyers--Alabama","Legislators--Alabama","Montgomery (Ala.)--Race relation--History--20th century","Montgomery Bus Boycott, Montgomery, Ala., 1955-1956","Montgomery Improvement Association","National Association for the Advancement of Colored People","National Democratic Party of Alabama","Nonviolence--Alabama","Passive resistance--Alabama","Political parties--Alabama","Politicians--Alabama","Project C, Birmingham, Ala., 1963","Protest marches--Alabama","Race discrimination--Alabama","Race relations","School integration--Alabama","Segregation in education--Alabama","Segregation in transportation--Alabama--Montgomery","Segregation--Alabama","Selma-Montgomery Rights March, 1965","Sit-ins--Alabama","Social change--Alabama","Southern Christian Leadership Conference","States' rights (American politics)","States' Rights Democratic Party","White supremacy movements--Alabama"],"dcterms_title":["Encyclopedia of Alabama"],"dcterms_type":["Text"],"dcterms_provenance":["Encyclopedia of Alabama (Project)"],"edm_is_shown_by":null,"edm_is_shown_at":["http://www.encyclopediaofalabama.org/"],"dcterms_temporal":null,"dcterms_rights_holder":null,"dcterms_bibliographic_citation":null,"dlg_local_right":["All rights reserved. The system maintained the repression of black citizens in Alabama and other southern states until it was dismantled during the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s and by subsequent civil rights legislation. Segregation is usually understood as a legal system of control consisting of the denial of voting rights, the maintenance of separate schools, and other forms of separation between the races, but formal legal rules were only one part of the regime. Most of Alabama's white Catholics shared white southerners' racism and initially opposed the goals of the movement. They preferred order and stability instead of activism for integration and racial justice. Catholic teaching clearly opposed racial discrimination, however, and after the mid-1960s there was little sympathy for segregation. For most of the civil rights movement, the Catholic Church in Alabama remained on the margins of the debates over integration and focused on internal Church affairs. March recalls country life. She explains the system of sharecropping her parents worked under. She also discusses what they did about health problems, handling most of them at home because hospitals were too far. She describes their recreation, how most of it came through the church. However, she says whites burned many of the black churches in her area. March recounts coming to Birmingham as a teenager in order to attend school. While her country school went through only the sixth grade, she claims that it was a better school, because she was ahead when she came to the city. After she finished school, she worked as a maid in the homes of whites. She describes dealing with those families. After working in an Avondale cotton mill, she worked as a maid for the Board of Education for 23 years; she also joined the AFL-CIO. March recalls that the Depression wasn't too hard on her because her husband worked for the city. She remembers buying coal from other blacks who collected the remnants. She also recalls feeding many hobos. She explains how difficult it could be for people to get aid; if someone got mad at their neighbor, they might tell the Red Cross people that that family didn't need aid anymore, and the Red Cross would cut them off without even investigating. March also remembers Jim Crow laws. She says she didn't like the way she was treated but was afraid to push for rights. In particular, she remembers having to move off the sidewalk for whites, being waited on after whites were, and having to call the children of the white people she worked for 'ma'am' and 'sir.'","Interviewed by Peggy Hamrick on August 1, 1984."],"dc_format":["image/jpeg"],"dcterms_identifier":null,"dcterms_language":["eng"],"dcterms_publisher":["Archive of American Minority Cultures"],"dc_relation":["Forms part of the online collection: Working Lives Oral History Project."],"dc_right":["http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"dcterms_is_part_of":null,"dcterms_subject":["Birmingham (Ala.)--Race relations","Rural life--Alabama","Sharecropping--Alabama","Discrimination in education--Alabama--Birmingham","Depressions--1929--Alabama","Segregation--Alabama","AFL-CIO","African American women household employees--Alabama--Birmingham","Women textile workers--Alabama","African Americans--Alabama--Birmingham--Social conditions--20th century","African Americans--Civil rights--Alabama--Birmingham--History--20th century","Depressions--1929--Alabama--Birmingham--Social aspects","Birmingham (Ala.)--Social conditions--20th century","African Americans--Economic conditions--20th century","African Americans--Segregation--History--20th century","New Deal, 1933-1939"],"dcterms_title":["Interview with Elizabeth March, 1984 August 1"],"dcterms_type":["Sound","Text"],"dcterms_provenance":["William Stanley Hoole Special Collections Library"],"edm_is_shown_by":null,"edm_is_shown_at":["http://digitalcollections.libraries.ua.edu/cdm/ref/collection/u0008_0000003/id/231"],"dcterms_temporal":null,"dcterms_rights_holder":null,"dcterms_bibliographic_citation":null,"dlg_local_right":null,"dcterms_medium":["oral histories (literary works)","transcripts","sound recordings"],"dcterms_extent":null,"dlg_subject_personal":["March, Elizabeth, 1914-"],"dcterms_subject_fast":null,"fulltext":null},{"id":"aar_wsfa_597","title":"WSFA item A080.0006","collection_id":"aar_wsfa","collection_title":"WSFA Collection","dcterms_contributor":null,"dcterms_spatial":["United States, Alabama, 32.75041, -86.75026"],"dcterms_creator":null,"dc_date":["1984-08-01/1984-08-06"],"dcterms_description":["The following notes accompany the original tape: N-S-641 Storage Reel // Ethic Commission Meeting Hillard Hore; Babers Parent Leave for Olympics 10 pm; Gas Spill on Hunter Loop Road; Air France Jet Hijacked to Iran; P.S.C. / Bell Rate Case Decision NOON; Dr. Teague on Lowndes County School System; Securities Commission Penny Stocks; Dr. Teague on Lowndes County Schools 6 pm; P.S.C. / South Central Bell Decision; Gov. He also discusses FDR and the effect of the Wagner Acts on organizing labor. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America of America (UMWA) and recounts organizing drives, strikes and the unique sense of solidarity among mine workers. Brown talks about his first job, loading coal. The employees had to buy their tools, powder, and lamp. He also defines \"pillar work,\" \"green work\" and \"top working.\" He briefly mentions black lung and says that it was originally called \"mining asthma.\" Brown says that \"segregation was everywhere else but there [inside the mine]. They respected one another, that's where the togetherness come at. You come out of the mine, you're separate... Even at the commissary they had the white line and the black line... the thing that pulled me the closest to the mine workers more than anything was because actually that's something that we didn't deal with... segregation in there.\" Brown believes that the UMWA influenced other unions in the steel and automobile industry, for example. People saw the effect of UMWA, Brown says. UMWA \"paved the way...someone had to be a trailblazer and we were all trailblazers... coal, coke is the base for making steel. Once a coal miner go on strike, automatically set coke, steel everything else down. So it's a relationship you see.\"","The digitization of this collection was funded by a gift from EBSCO Industries."],"dc_format":["audio/mpeg","image/jpeg"],"dcterms_identifier":null,"dcterms_language":["eng"],"dcterms_publisher":null,"dc_relation":["The University of Alabama Libraries Special Collections"],"dc_right":["http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC-EDU/1.0/"],"dcterms_is_part_of":["Working Lives Oral History Project"],"dcterms_subject":["Brown, Earl--Interviews","Coal miners--Alabama","Labor unions--Alabama","United Mine Workers of America","Coal miners--Segregation","Segregation--Alabama","United States--Civilization--1970-"],"dcterms_title":["Interview with Earl Brown"],"dcterms_type":["Sound","Text"],"dcterms_provenance":["William Stanley Hoole Special Collections Library"],"edm_is_shown_by":null,"edm_is_shown_at":["http://digitalcollections.libraries.ua.edu/cdm/ref/collection/u0008_0000003/id/120"],"dcterms_temporal":null,"dcterms_rights_holder":null,"dcterms_bibliographic_citation":null,"dlg_local_right":["Images are in the public domain or protected under U.S. copyright law (Title 17, U.S. Code), and both types may be used for research and private study.
