- Description:
- This audio recording features Joseph E. Lowery's address at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Nonviolent Peace Prize Ceremony on January 14, 1981 at the Martin Luther King Center for Social Change in Atlanta, Georgia. As part of his pledge to preach peace for the first six months of the year (at 00:01:23), Lowery gives his "Black Community Come Home" sermon, inspired by Martin Luther King, Jr. 's "America Come Home" speech, encouraging the Black community to come home. Lowery encourages Black communities to recommit themselves to a new sense of "familyhood", unity, and excellence in order to address racism, unemployment, and the criminal justice system. This audio recording concludes with the singing of "We Shall Overcome" and a benediction.
