- "David W. Morehead was born September 9, 1918 in Greensboro, North Carolina. He graduated from Dudley High School in 1936 and went to work at Pomona Terra Cotta company. He then worked at Vick Chemical and later earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from North Carolina A&T State University. David Morehead spent much of his career with the Hayes-Taylor YMCA in Greensboro, a facility built to serve the black population. Morehead was initially hired as an assistant, but within a few years was appointed youth director. In 1949, he became the executive director, a position he held until 1971. Under his leadership, the YMCA became a meeting place for civil rights activists and leaders of both races. From 1971 to 1986, Morehead served as director of consumer affairs and community services in Greensboro at the state office of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Affairs. He later became a partner in Carolina Woods, a housing development for low- and moderate-income people, and worked on a project to find better health care for the elderly. Morehead also served on the North Carolina A&T State University Board of Trustees for a record twenty-one years. In 1968, the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce presented Morehead with the Nat Greene Award for community contributions. In February 1999, the Morehead-Simkins Independent Living Center, apartments for low-income and elderly people, was dedicated in his honor.
