- "Janet Chatten Boyte was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1915. She graduated from New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois; completed her undergraduate work at Denison University in Granville, Ohio; and received her master's degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Mrs. Boyte worked for the Red Cross for several years. She met her husband, Harry G. Boyte, while they were both working for the Red Cross in Morocco. They were married in January, 1944, in Evanston, Illinois. They eventually moved to Atlanta, and from there to Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1960. The family moved to Greensboro in 1962 when Mr. Boyte took at job with the American Friends Service Committee in High Point. While in Greensboro, Mrs. Boyte was the youth director for the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA). There she worked to provide integrated programs for young women. The family participated in several marches and demonstrations that took place in Greensboro during their time here. The Boytes moved back to Atlanta in 1963, while their son began attending Duke University. In Atlanta, Mr. Boyte was appointed special assistant to Martin Luther King, Jr. and worked for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
