- Biography:
- "Charles E. Davis, a native of Hampton, South Carolina, served as a public school teacher and principal in his home state before moving to Greensboro in 1956 to begin work with the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC). Davis was part of a biracial team sent by the AFSC to help ease the transition from segregated to desegregated schools in southern towns. He stayed in Greensboro and served as director of the N.C. Manpower Development Corporation mobility project, then later was appointed director of the Guilford County Economic Opportunity Council (EOC). He remained in this position until 1972, when he moved to Soul City, N.C., to become chief assistant to the city's president, Floyd McKissick.
