There are several photographs of Maddox riding on bicycles and speaking to crowds. Many of the photographs depict supporters holding signs that read \"This is Maddox Country.\" The collection also includes rare interior and exterior images of Maddox's restaurant, the Pickrick and his employees. Some of the photographs were taken shortly after Maddox closed the restaurant and depict signs he made to register his protests against the Civil Rights Act of 1964. There are many images of people in the entertainment industry and in politics pictured with Maddox, mostly during his tenure as governor and lieutenant governor. Included are baseball player Hank Aaron, musicians Johnny Cash and Graham Jackson, and Georgia politicians, including Jimmy Carter, Zell Miller, Sonny Perdue, Ivan Allen, Jr., Charlie Brown, and Mugsy Smith. Also included are civil rights leaders, Hosea Williams, Joseph Lowery, and President Lyndon Johnson. He dropped out of high school in 1933 to work as a machine operator at the Atlantic Steel Company. Before working at Atlantic Steel, he had apprenticed as a dental technician. Maddox married Virginia Cox (1919-1997) in 1936, and in 1944 they opened a grocery store and restaurant. Building on the success of their first business they opened the Pickrick Restaurant in 1947. Maddox used the Pickrick as a platform for his political segregationist views, and in 1965 he closed the restaurant rather than comply with the public accommodations section of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Maddox ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Atlanta in 1957 and 1961, and later served as governor of the state of Georgia from 1967 to 1971. The Libraries' physical holdings depict an American tableau and represent a snap-shot of Floridian culture. Rare book collections define the historic context of the African American community in the nation's struggles and growth. Florida collections, closer to home, document the lives of African American Floridians both in life and through death. Digital collections draw special attention to the The Visionaires and the records of the Cunningham Funeral Home.","","The Visionaires Collection consists of minutes of The Visionaires' meetings, records of financial transactions, photographs, and materials that document the organization's participation in school and community activities. The Visionaires are a community organization that would foster the civic, cultural, and social affairs of Negro women in Gainesville, Florida from the late 1930s onward.","","The Cunningham Funeral Home Collection includes records that document African-American social history in north and central Florida. Besides burial records, the collection contains photographs, financial transactions, oral histories, maps, letters, secretarial notes, political history, and notes on dress and life in Florida. Most importantly, these records establish community demographics. Until the 1970s, the only comprehensive listing of African-American communities in any Florida county was found in morticians' records. For instance, if a researcher wants to know where African-American churches and schools were located, that information can be found in the records. Numbering upwards of 80,000 images, this archive represents the largest single collection of photographic images of any Black community in the United States-or the world for that matter.","In 2001, Carnegie Museum of Art acquired the collection from the Harris family. The museum is in the process of cataloguing and digitizing the images and plans to present a major retrospective on Harris' work in 2009. Using the museum's online collection search page, you can now view over 18,000 images in the collection, and more are being added to the database each week. Since many of the photographs and negatives were not labeled, the museum asks the assistance of the public in helping to identify the people, places, and events in the images and provides an e-mail link included in every Teenie Harris negative record in our online database.","The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata."],"dc_format":null,"dcterms_identifier":null,"dcterms_language":null,"dcterms_publisher":null,"dc_relation":null,"dc_right":["http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"dcterms_is_part_of":null,"dcterms_subject":["African American photographers--Pennsylvania","Pittsburgh Courier Publishing Co.","African Americans--Pennsylvania--Social life and customs--History--20th century"],"dcterms_title":["Documenting our past: The Teenie Harris Archive Project"],"dcterms_type":["StillImage"],"dcterms_provenance":["Carnegie Museum of Art"],"edm_is_shown_by":null,"edm_is_shown_at":["https://cmoa.org/art/teenie-harris-archive/"],"dcterms_temporal":null,"dcterms_rights_holder":["Carnegie Museum of Art"],"dcterms_bibliographic_citation":null,"dlg_local_right":null,"dcterms_medium":["black-and-white photographs"],"dcterms_extent":null,"dlg_subject_personal":["Harris, Teenie, 1908-1998"],"dcterms_subject_fast":null,"fulltext":null}],"pages":{"current_page":27,"next_page":28,"prev_page":26,"total_pages":38,"limit_value":12,"offset_value":312,"total_count":455,"first_page?":false,"last_page?":false},"facets":[{"name":"creator_facet","items":[{"value":"Smith, Lillian (Lillian Eugenia), 1897-1966","hits":6},{"value":"Richard B.
