The images show Georgia primary and secondary public schools that were scheduled for demolition. The collection includes both white and African American schools from across the state.","The Georgia Department of Education undertook a building program in the 1950s in response to a 1947 survey which found that the State had too many small poorly built schools. The survey also found that general schoolhouse conditions were deplorable and that African American schools were in worse shape than the white schools. As a result, schools were consolidated, some new buildings constructed, and small or poorly built schools were demolished.
