Lewis worked in East Tennessee and in Meridian, Mississippi before he was hired in 1969 working at the Atlanta Voice in Atlanta at the Atlanta Voice, a black-owned weekly newspaper, in 1969.  In 1973 Lewis was hired at the Atlanta Inquirer, where he documented the emergence of the city's first black mayor, Maynard Jackson, and the election of civil rights leader Andrew Young to Congress.  Lewis later became a reporter and wrote, produced, and hosted \"Southwind\" a program featuring news, interviews and events in Atlanta.  This collection of photographs consists of images taken by Boyd Lewis as a photographer at the Atlanta Voice and the Atlanta Inquirer. The photographs largely depict the rise of the African American political class in Atlanta through images of campaign events, civic meetings, protest marches, press conferences, and staged portrait photography.  The collection includes images of business leaders, such as Jesse Hill, Herman Russell, and Robert Pascal. Also featured are: civil rights leaders, such as, Fred Bennett, Tyrone Brooks, Jesse Jackson, and Hosea Williams, : and politicians, including Julian Bond, Ben Brown, Jimmy Carter, Maynard Jackson, Vernon Jordan, John Lewis, and Andrew Young. Other photographs include images of African American and white journalists, social activists, clergy, and students. This effort was bolstered in the 1970s by funding from the Kentucky Oral History Commission, which supported a number of the interviews included in this first online offering. The African American Oral History Collection includes interviews conducted as part of projects designed to document particular aspects of Louisville's history and/or important local institutions, such as the Red Cross (Community) Hospital and the Louisville Municipal College, as well as projects that sought to document African American life more generally. Most of the interviews were conducted in the late 1970s.","Taken as a group, these interviews were conducted in order to document the many aspects of life in Louisville, particularly as experienced by African Americans. Businessmen, educators, politicians, doctors, historians, musicians, and other civic leaders of various kinds, as well as regular folks, were interviewed. There are interviews with a small number of white people who connected with the black community in important ways. Some interviews are brief, lasting 30 minutes or less; others are more extensive, covering several interview sessions and lasting four or more hours. The interviewees talk about their parents, their upbringing (often outside Louisville), their experiences in school, their careers, and their achievements. They discuss everyday life as well as the big events in the history they lived. The Allen Building Takeover Collection contains announcements, flyers, publications, correspondence, handouts, reports, transcripts, ephemera, clippings, a bibliography, WDBS radio broadcasts, oral histories, and photographs documenting Black Culture Week (Feb. 4-12, 1969), the Allen Building Takeover (Feb. 13, 1969), student demands, statements by Provost Marcus Hobbs and by Duke President Douglas Knight, student convocations and demonstrations both in support of and against the Takeover, and later events on the Duke campus and in Durham, North Carolina. In addition, the collection contains clippings and artwork related to remembering the Takeover, including the 2002 Allen Building lock-in. On college campuses, silk screen printing was done painstakingly by hand, often on the back of long fan-folding computer printouts. The effort proved worthwhile, for it provided an effective low-cost means of replicating striking color artwork in large format in hundreds of copies. Many posters called for unity and peace. Others questioned the very basis of the Vietnam War, the draft, and political surveillance by the Nixon administration. Of note, one poster memorialized the four students who were killed by National Guard troops at Kent State University in Ohio on May 4, 1970. The Art of Protest Collection consists of twenty-six digitized silk screen posters documenting campus social protest movements in California during the 1960s and 1970s.
