Johnson, and Elsie Densmore, who was a founding member of the Marietta Branch. From 1980 to the present time, the branch has been led by six presidents: Dover Ferrell (1980-1982), Oscar Freeman (1982-1986), Jerry Dodd (1986-1992), Sandra McGary-Ervin (1992-1994), Donnie Perry (1994-1997), and Deane Bonner (1997-present). The records of the Cobb County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) consist of materials from the office of the President, during the terms of Donnie Perry (1994-1997) and Deane Bonner (1997-present). The bulk of the collection dates from 1983 to 2001, and includes administrative records, certificates, clippings, committee records, conference materials, correspondence, fliers, leaflets, minutes, miscellaneous materials, newsletters, photographic prints, programs, and publications. Other records of interest include materials from Oscar Freeman, who served as the NAACP president from 1982 until 1986, and personal records of Deane Bonner, the organization's current president. The interviews were for a history seminar taught by Dr.Clarence Bacote (HIS 406: Introductory Graduate Course in United States History). Roberts interviewed members of Atlanta’s African American community who were born in the late 19th century. Most of the subjects were Georgia natives and a few were graduates of Atlanta University Center schools. He asked them to discuss their memories of various prominent African Americans and events, as well as living conditions for African Americans in the first half of the 20th century. He generally asked them the same questions and let them elaborate at will. He was especially interested in segregation and race relations, and asked about the way African Americans were treated in the justice system, hospitals, and in the workplace. He also asked about their memories of Atlanta specifically, including the riot of 1906, Ku Klux Klan visits, and Booker T. The project began in the summer of 1972, when the Black Studies Department was provided with $1500 in university funds to begin preliminary research on sources of black history in the Pacific Northwest. Topics discussed in the interviews include early black settlers, job opportunities, social life and community, living patterns, black churches, and black political involvement from the late 1800s through 1974.
