The focus area was based upon the historical significance of the Regional Colored School and the communities of the counties that attended. Being that the school was [structure is there, but repurposed] located in Habersham most of this collection is from Cornelia; which also had the largest population of African Americans of all four counties. Stephens County was added to the \"region\" based upon it having been carved out of Habersham County and the significant African American history that comes primarily from Toccoa (18 miles from Cornelia). However, Toccoa had its own equalization school (K-12). Banks, Habersham, Rabun and White had primary schools for African American children. The program was organized by Dorothy Height and Polly Cowan under the umbrella of the National Council of Negro Women with the assistance of Susie Goodwillie and Doris Wilson. The exhibit includes newspaper articles, black-and-white photographs, pamphlets, biographies, interviews, letters, and a summary of experiences written by Polly Cowan after the first summer. The exhibit also includes a glossary listing and defining individuals, places, organziations, and terms used in the exhibit.
