The range of Georgia politics is covered, particularly the gubernatorial contests from 1946 to 2002, the U.S. Senate races of 1972, 1980, 2002, and 2008, the Civil Rights Movement, reapportionment, the development of Atlanta, political journalism, and the careers of key Georgia politicians not available for interview or deceased, particuarly Richard B. Russell, Jr., Herman E. Talmadge, S. Ernest Vandiver, Paul Coverdell, Jimmy Carter, Newt Gingrich, Sam Nunn, Lester Maddox, and Marvin Griffin.","Charles Robert \"Bob\" Short was born in Clayton, Georgia on April 17, 1932 and educated at Young Harris College, Georgia Southern University, and the Woodrow Wilson College of Law. Upon discharge from the Air Force in 1956 he began his career as a sports writer for the Atlanta Journal, and then served in various capacities in the administrations of Georgia Governors Marvin Griffin, Ernest Vandiver, and Carl Sanders. Short coordinated the campaign of Jimmy Carter when Carter ran for governor of Georgia in 1966, and later worked as press secretary for Carter's opponent in that race, Governor Lester Maddox, in 1967 and 1968. In 1968 he was appointed regional director of the Office of Emergency Preparedness -- the forerunner of FEMA -- by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Entering the private sector in the early 1970s, Short worked for Hoffman LaRoche and Hospital Corporation of America, and for his own firm, Investmart, Inc., a marketing consulting business. Short remained active politically, consulting on a limited scale and serving as special assistant to Governor and Senator Zell Miller and Senator Johnny Isakson. Short retired to Blairsville, Georgia. Bob Short wrote the only biography of Lester Maddox titled, Everything is Pickrick (Mercer University Press, 1999), which won him the title \"Author of the Year\" from the Georgia Writers Association. In 2006 he began a lecture and discussion program at neighboring Young Harris College entitled, Reflections on Georgia Politics. He then partnered with the Richard B. Early materials (1920s-1939) include glass plate negatives and photographs taken by Jack Lane and his brother W. C. Lane as freelance photographers for the Atlanta News, other newspapers, and wire services.  The bulk of the collection consists of images of the Atlanta, Georgia area documenting its economic growth, social changes, and political activities over the years.  The collection contains images of AT\u0026T, Atlanta Gas Light Company, Coca-Cola, Delta Air Lines, Eastern Air Lines, Rich's, Shriners Yaarab Temple, and the Southeastern Fair while other images illustrate the development of Atlanta's transportation system.  During World War II, the studio produced photographic documentation of the Office of Civilian Defense and the United Service Organization. The collection depicts Atlanta's social and political changes with images of preparation for World War II, African Americans registering to vote, Ku Klux Klan rallies at Stone Mountain, political campaigns, sports events, labor union activities, motion picture premiers (including Gone with the Wind), disasters, and individual portraits. Notable public figures include Ivan Allen, Ellis Arnall, William B. Hartsfield, Roy LeCraw, Margaret Mitchell, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Carl Sanders, Eugene Talmadge, and Robert W. Woodruff.","In 1939 Jack Hubert Lane and his brother W.C. Lane formed the Lane Brothers Photo News Service, a photographic studio in Atlanta, Georgia.  During the late 1940's Dan and W.C. Lane (sons of the founders) joined the studio and changed the name to Lane Brothers Commercial Photographers in 1953. Images of note include 30 photographs of the Summerhill race riot (1966); First Community Officers (1968); Negro School Traffic Policewomen (1950); and the first African-American patrolmen (1948).","Herbert Turner Jenkins (20 March 1907 - 20 July 1990) was born in Lithonia GA and became an Atlanta police officer at the age of 24. On 2 February 1947, Mayor William B. Hartsfield appointed him chief of police, a position he held until 1972. During the 1960s, Jenkins worked closely with Mayor Ivan Allen, Jr., to ensure Atlanta's safety during times of racial and social unrest. It is generally believed that Jenkins' approach, to accommodate civil rights activists, spared Atlanta from the serious riots seen in other cities. In 1967, Jenkins was the only Southerner named by President Lyndon Johnson to the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders. Cain’s assignments included shooting news as well as fashion, children, and visiting or local celebrities. She also placed some photos in national publications. With World War Two underway, Americans serving in the military and the home front were recurring elements in her work during this time. Kay Cain's last photograph published in the Constitution appeared in April 1944.
