Lewis worked in East Tennessee and in Meridian, Mississippi before he was hired in 1969 working at the Atlanta Voice in Atlanta at the Atlanta Voice, a black-owned weekly newspaper, in 1969.  In 1973 Lewis was hired at the Atlanta Inquirer, where he documented the emergence of the city's first black mayor, Maynard Jackson, and the election of civil rights leader Andrew Young to Congress.  Lewis later became a reporter and wrote, produced, and hosted \"Southwind\" a program featuring news, interviews and events in Atlanta.  This collection of photographs consists of images taken by Boyd Lewis as a photographer at the Atlanta Voice and the Atlanta Inquirer. The photographs largely depict the rise of the African American political class in Atlanta through images of campaign events, civic meetings, protest marches, press conferences, and staged portrait photography.  The collection includes images of business leaders, such as Jesse Hill, Herman Russell, and Robert Pascal. Also featured are: civil rights leaders, such as, Fred Bennett, Tyrone Brooks, Jesse Jackson, and Hosea Williams, : and politicians, including Julian Bond, Ben Brown, Jimmy Carter, Maynard Jackson, Vernon Jordan, John Lewis, and Andrew Young. Other photographs include images of African American and white journalists, social activists, clergy, and students.  The remainder of the collection includes photographs of downtown Atlanta and the surrounding neighborhoods of Summerhill, Cabbagetown, Grant Park, the Old Fourth Ward, and Midtown.","The Boyd Lewis collection contains 7,093 black and white negatives, 2,855 of which are digitized and available on this database. The early letters, largely from Clarence Jordan to his mother, are most revealing as to the character of the man. The many clippings and printed materials about Clarence Jordan and Koinonia also give insight into the community life, and the programs indicate the wide demand for Dr. Jordan as a speaker. The collection also includes the manuscripts, both written and typed, with annotations and/or corrections and revisions of many of Dr. Jordan's writings, particularly the Cotton Patch versions of the Gospels.","Clarence Jordan (1912-1969), a white Southern Baptist minister, cofounded Koinonia Farm in Sumter County and translated many New Testament books into the \"Cotton Patch\" versions, colloquial interpretations set in the American South. Jordan committed his ministry to racial reconciliation and economic justice. A gifted preacher and teacher, he was a popular and frequent speaker at progressive religious gatherings across the United States from the 1940s through the 1960s. Koinonia was the Christian farm community that Jordan and his wife Florence co-founded in 1942. It is considered to be the birthplace of Habitat for Humanity, among other charities. Early materials (1920s-1939) include glass plate negatives and photographs taken by Jack Lane and his brother W. C. Lane as freelance photographers for the Atlanta News, other newspapers, and wire services.  The bulk of the collection consists of images of the Atlanta, Georgia area documenting its economic growth, social changes, and political activities over the years.  The collection contains images of AT\u0026T, Atlanta Gas Light Company, Coca-Cola, Delta Air Lines, Eastern Air Lines, Rich's, Shriners Yaarab Temple, and the Southeastern Fair while other images illustrate the development of Atlanta's transportation system.  During World War II, the studio produced photographic documentation of the Office of Civilian Defense and the United Service Organization. The collection depicts Atlanta's social and political changes with images of preparation for World War II, African Americans registering to vote, Ku Klux Klan rallies at Stone Mountain, political campaigns, sports events, labor union activities, motion picture premiers (including Gone with the Wind), disasters, and individual portraits. Notable public figures include Ivan Allen, Ellis Arnall, William B. Hartsfield, Roy LeCraw, Margaret Mitchell, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Carl Sanders, Eugene Talmadge, and Robert W. Woodruff.","In 1939 Jack Hubert Lane and his brother W.C. Lane formed the Lane Brothers Photo News Service, a photographic studio in Atlanta, Georgia.  During the late 1940's Dan and W.C. Lane (sons of the founders) joined the studio and changed the name to Lane Brothers Commercial Photographers in 1953.
