Ward, Emory executive vice president and dean of the faculty, speaks about a Georgia Supreme Court ruling allowing private universities to admit African American students without becoming subject to state taxes. Dr. Ward says Emory officials \"are highly gratified\" at the Georgia Supreme Court's decision which will allow greater freedom in admissions policies. He reports that a policy adopted at the university's Board of Trustees meeting held in November 1961 allows Emory admissions officers to \"consider applications from all persons without regard to race or color.\" Ward cautions that since the school year is scheduled to begin on September 21, he does not know when the first African American students will attend the school. In March 1962, after the Emory admissions policy of November 1961, two African Americans applied for admission to the dental school. Emory University officials pressed the case to the Georgia Supreme Court which issued the September 1962 ruling cited here. The first full-time students at Emory were two women enrolled in the school of nursing who graduated in June 1964. Hamilton Holmes, who was one of the first two African American students at the University of Georgia, became the first African American admitted to the Emory school of medicine, graduating in 1967.","Title supplied by cataloger."],"dc_format":["video/mp4"],"dcterms_identifier":["Clip number: wsbn45260"],"dcterms_language":["eng"],"dcterms_publisher":null,"dc_relation":null,"dc_right":["http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"dcterms_is_part_of":["Original found in the WSB-TV newsfilm collection."],"dcterms_subject":["College integration--Georgia--Atlanta","College students--Georgia--Atlanta","African American college students--Georgia--Atlanta","Segregation in education--Georgia--Atlanta","Private universities and colleges--Taxation--Law and legislation--Georgia","Tax exemption--Georgia"],"dcterms_title":["WSB-TV newsfilm clip of Dr. Judson C. The clip begins with images of a burning cross and men wearing Klan robes, some with their faces covered. Next, Grand Dragon Calvin Craig, wearing a dark robe with a dragon symbol, asks why Governor Vandiver did not prosecute African Americans who injured several white people during a march that turned violent, presumably the night march that took place on July 24. Craig proposes that Governor Vandiver made a deal with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to not prosecute those involved in the violence in exchange for African American votes for gubernatorial candidate Carl Sanders. Sanders ran as the opponent of Marvin Griffin, a staunch segregationist and former governor of Georgia in the Democratic primary; voters favoring segregation would likely have supported Griffin. Craig then denounces Vandiver for conspiring \"with the Negroes to promote communism here,\" alleging that the governor hid information from the people of Albany, \"that these Negro leaders have a subversive background and are being dominated by communist forces.\" Some civil rights activists had previous affiliation with the Labor movement, and through this the Communist party; Stanley Levison, a key advisor of Dr. Martin Luther King, and Jack O\u0026'Dell, the manager of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC)'s New York office, were both affiliated with the Communist party in the 1950s. However, most movement leaders had severed ties with the Communist party years before becoming involved in the civil rights movement or had never been affiliated with communists. Segregationists distorted these previous affiliations as subversion, an effective strategy to malign civil rights activists as unpatriotic; to discourage sympathy for the movement; and to employ the investigative and law enforcement power of the Federal Bureau of Investigation to closely monitor civil rights groups. The Klan rally was held at private property south of the city of Albany, with participants from Alabama, Florida, and Georgia. An estimated three thousand people attended the event.","Title supplied by cataloger."],"dc_format":["video/mp4"],"dcterms_identifier":["Clip number: wsbn37218"],"dcterms_language":["eng"],"dcterms_publisher":null,"dc_relation":null,"dc_right":["http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"dcterms_is_part_of":["Original found in the WSB-TV newsfilm collection."],"dcterms_subject":["Communism--Georgia--Albany","Governors--Georgia","Subversive activities--Georgia--Albany","Violence--Georgia--Albany","Speeches, addresses, etc.","Congresses and conventions--Georgia","Segregation--Georgia","Race relations","Albany (Ga.)--Race relations--History--20th century"],"dcterms_title":["WSB-TV newsfilm clip of Ku Klux Klan Grand Dragon Calvin Craig condemning Georgia governor Ernest Vandiver for compromising on racial segregation at Klan rally held in Albany, Georgia, 1962 September 3"],"dcterms_type":["MovingImage"],"dcterms_provenance":["Walter J. The clip begins as Rabbi Israel and Rev. Roy, apparently recently released from police custody, walk down the steps of the Albany City Hall carrying small paper bags; each removes his wallet from the bag and examines its contents. Next, an unidentified reporter interviews Rabbi Israel regarding the reason he came to Albany. Rabbi Israel explains that several cornerstones of the Jewish faith include working on behalf of justice and living in remembrance of the enslavement of the ancestral Israelites in Egypt. In doing so, he argues, it is then necessary to speak out against the continued bondage of others whenever possible. He describes his presence in Albany as an effort to help acknowledge the existence of \"the evil of segregation\" and to promote awareness of that evil. When the reporter asks him if he feels he accomplished anything by coming to Albany, Rabbi Israel responds that while nothing is ever accomplished all at once, \"by putting in little building blocks, we ultimately have a whole building.\" Reverend Ralph Lord Roy of Grace Methodist Church in New York City, and Rabbi Richard Israel, Yale University chaplain, were two of seventy-five ministers, primarily from New York and Chicago, who came to Albany at the request of local leaders and Dr. Martin Luther King. The clergymen had hoped to help facilitate interaction between the Albany Movement and the local white community, but Albany's white ministers refused to meet with the \"outsiders.\" The visiting ministers were arrested after a prayer vigil at city hall; all but eleven of the clergy were bailed out of jail that same day. The remaining eleven ministers stayed in jail until September 3, 1962.","Title supplied by cataloger.","IMLS Grant, 2008.","Digibeta Center Cut (4 x 3) downconvert from HDD5 1080/23.98PsF film transfer. These plans for his city include public attention for those who do not follow the boycott. To encourage citizens to follow the boycott organized by local leaders, photographs of those not following the boycott were taken and displayed to the public.
