Davis recalls an incident which was life-changing regarding her racial awareness and understanding on the morning after the lynching, when conversation in the break-room at her place of employment had turned to the events of the night before, she had spoken unthinkingly of her stepfather's involvement (and using a derogatory racial term), and an African American cleaning woman stood up against it. Other topics include Davis' family background, awareness of the events of the lynching and the trial, and later events in the lives of those involved.
