Her mother eventually became the Democratic Committeewoman for Lake County Illinois. In 1968, Kirby, a senior at Cabrini College in Pennsylvania, was home for the summer and attended events in both Lincoln and Grant parks related to the Democratic National Convention (DNC). She traveled to Chicago from Waukegan for three days. After seeing the number of military and police personnel, however, she did not participate in the violent demonstrations that took place outside the Conrad Hilton Hotel. Working as a beat officer for the Chicago Police Department, personnel from his district were transported to Grant Park for crowd control. Though he did witness a lot of tension and some violence inflicted by officers, he recalled that his captain gave an order to not swing any batons and that his district managed to escape the ordeal with few incidents. She went to Lincoln Park on the first day of the convention with close friends from her high school just to check out what was going on. Though eager to go home at 11pm when the police requested the protesters to leave, her friends; who also happened to be her ride home, wished to stay and see what would happen. Most of Ms. Berger's recollections center on the people she met and the pride she felt about the work she did to make sure the Democratic National Convention (DNC) ran smoothly. Her time was spent at the International Amphitheatre and in or near the Conrad Hilton Hotel. While she sympathized with protestors, she felt that both they and the police hindered the convention. Hunger sent her back home to make dinner before the violence erupted. Barbara watched it all unfold on live television and the next day went to survey the aftermath of what she had seen. Johnson grew up in northwest suburban Park Ridge, Illinois in a politically active family. At the time of the Democratic National Convention, Johnson had recently graduated high school and was a volunteer for Senator Eugene McCarthy's presidential campaign. During the convention, he greeted delegates at O'Hare International Airport and drove them to Chicago hotels. He completed his volunteer activities during the day and went home in the evening. Therefore, he did not participate in any demonstrations or personally experience violence.
