His grandfather arranged for Glass to be a greeter at the convention. He chose not to do this and instead went to the area around the Conrad Hilton Hotel. He was in the crowd as the mood intensified and the police presence grew increasingly violent. Mr. Alter recalls attempting to stop the police from being violent with young people outside of the Conrad Hilton Hotel. He also mentions the anti-Vietnam War protest on April 27, 1968 when Chicago police acted violently toward participants. He saw that as a precursor to what occurred in August. In the mid-1960s, the couple purchased a house on North Lincoln Park Avenue West. From this vantage point, they experienced the riots related to the Democratic National Convention. Each night, shortly after 11:00 pm, the couple would look at Lincoln Park and the streets around their home to see Chicago police officers \"taking pride\" in clobbering people on the heads as they cleared people from the park. At one point Mr. Garner remembers hearing a policeman say with humor, \"Leave your wounded behind. After the violence outside of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) Wednesday night, Ms. Rategan headed to Lincoln Park but did not make it because of a near-miss encounter with police. She recalls her own disillusionment with police during the time of the DNC. He described a typical middle class upbringing in a household that was not political. Mr. Fitzgerald recounts extensive involvement in the Civil Rights Movement; he registered voters in Alabama and participated in the Selma March. In 1968, he was newly married and preparing for the bar or legal examination. He described his interaction with the convention and events surrounding it as being somewhat distant. He and his wife would visit Grant and Lincoln parks during the day, talk to people, and head home in the evening. He recalls watching the violence of Wednesday night from the window of a building at 116 South Michigan Avenue, which he and former colleagues later turned into a first aid station for injured
