After a rural upbringing, he entered the United States Army, where he served as a jeep driver in Germany. Huber worked in the Chicago-Gary Defense Area, and experienced the military's preparations for the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. In 1969, Huber volunteered to go to Vietnam, where he served until late 1970.
