This student sit-in marked a time when the school system was grappling with desegregation in the wake of contested efforts to racially integrate both students and staff. Similar sit-ins and protests took place at schools and county offices before and after this photograph was taken. Behind the efforts to desegregate were directives from the federal government's Department of Health, Education and Welfare and and the board's own plan of gradual desegregation.
