The first part of the audio recording contains a discussion on church and violence led by Dr. Harry Richardson and Reverend Wayne Johnson on March 14, 1969, and a sermon delivered at convocation. This discussion is a continued portion of multiple discussions about church and violence. The participants are welcomed to share thoughts about the conference and the topic in general. An ITC student makes a statement about three different forms of violence that affect African Americans: 1) economic, 2) law and order, 3) political. Another speaker begins and reads a statement that addresses violence in relation to church action. He also speaks about the inaction of churches and what churches should be doing. The speaker then moves to adopt the statements. Dr. Richardson discusses violence and his experiences from other conferences. He uses this time to encourage participants to critique the conference and gives special thanks. The second part of the audio recording contains a sermon delivered at convocation. The speaker discusses public welfare, the community, recreation, and justice in relation to Christians. The first is Bishop Joseph A. Johnson, a professor of New Testament at ITC. Bishop Johnson references the Biblical book of Luke and discusses the topic of conceptual violence. The second speaker is Dr. L. Harold DeWolf. Dr. DeWolf was the dean of Wesley Theological Seminary (1965-1972) as well as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.s dissertation advisor. Dr. DeWolf uses the story of the Good Samaritan to illustrate the love of neighbor that Christians should exude despite the violence and turmoil going on all about them. DeWolf discusses alternate methods for dealing with violence and charges Christians to be ministers of reconciliation and not retaliation. The last speaker is Dr. Harvey Seifert, a Methodist minister and professor at Claremont School of Theology. Dr. Seifert describes how to determine how to choose between violent and non-violent means in any particular situation. He also speaks on how ITC is one of the few schools striving to change that by illustrating the improvements and successes of the seminary. The second speaker is the Honorable Richard G. Hatcher. Hatcher was the first African-American mayor of Gary, Indiana. Hatcher chooses the Biblical book of Amos to illustrate how God is upset with the church for remaining silent instead of being a force for good in society. He reminds the audience that Christianity was birthed in violence with the hanging of Christ on the cross.
