- Students will be divided into 2 groups. Group A receives special treatment for the entire day. Group B is treated differently from Group A. Switch Group A and Group B. Students will record in a journal their feelings about each day. Reflect on the prior two days. Discuss segregation with students and explain that some of the feelings they had may have been the same feelings African Americans hadduring these times. Discuss different topics of segregation such as separate water fountains. Introduce primary source pictures. Explain that the Selma-to-Montgomery March was one of the ways African Americans protested for equal rights. Using deliberation, have students give their insights on the pros and cons of a march. Conclude with students that are pro-march create an equal rights sign. The students that are anti-march should write an alternative strategy they feel would be more effective.
