- Born in 1937, Leo Vernon Washington was a student at Southern University in New Orleans, Louisiana when he was arrested for his participation in the Freedom Rides during the summer of 1961. As part of the Freedom Ride, Washington, along with nearly a dozen others, rode a Greyhound bus from New Orleans, Louisiana to Jackson, Mississippi where he was arrested on July 15, 1961.
