- James Slade was the second African American to attend medical school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He married Catherine Slade and in 1965, after graduating and become a pediatrician, the family moved to Edenton, North Carolina, where for many years, James Slade was the only African American physician in the community.--From Oral Histories of the American South biography.
