Biography:

Joan Frances Pleune was a twenty-two year old student at University of California Berkeley when she was arrested for her participation in the Freedom Rides. As part of the Freedom Ride Pleune rode on the Illinois Central Railroad from New Orleans, Louisiana to Jackson, Mississippi where she was arrested with nearly a dozen others on 20 June 1961. Pleune's sister, Katherine A. Pleune, was also a participant in the Freedom Rides of 1961.
