Heffernan, Nathan S. (Nathan Stewart), 1920-2007
Nathan Stewart Heffernan was born August 6, 1920, in Frederic, Wisconsin. In 1959, Heffernan became deputy attorney general of Wisconsin and remained in that capacity until 1962 when he was appointed by President John F. Kennedy as U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin. In 1964, Wisconsin governor John W. Reynolds appointed Heffernan, then age 43, to the Wisconsin Supreme Court; in 1983, he became chief justice. Heffernan died on April 13, 2007.
