- African American Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee member from New York, Rutger's graduate (1963); Came to Americus early in 1963 with Ralph Allen and John Perdew, helped organize the Sumter County Movement; Arrested along with Allen and Perdew after 8 August 1963 demonstration, charged with "seditious conspiracy" (inciting insurrection), a capital crime, held without bail for 3 months; released 1 Nov., 1963 by 3 judge federal panel who found the charge unconstitutional.
