Abney, George M., 1930-2002

"Abney began his career in journalism as a high school student covering the Athens High Trojans and by 1945, he was a sportswriter for the Athens Banner-Herald. After graduating from the then "j-school" in 1951, he was offered a job with the Associated Press. However, Uncle Sam offered him full-time position in the Korean War. Upon his return, Abney served as a teaching assistant while studying for his master's degree in journalism and devoted the rest of his professional career to teaching. He served the Grady College as Director of Undergraduate Services and Honors Advisor from 1957 until his retirement in 1993 and throughout this time, he was a favored professor by many of his students. He dedicated many hours to the honors program, helped organize the Public Relations Student Society of America at the University of Georgia and truly made a difference in the lives of many of his students."--from press release, Grady School
