(John Fitzgerald), 1917-1963 In May of 1963, black elementary, middle, and high school students in Birmingham left school to participate in a four-day civil rights demonstration. Washington Booker was among approximately 2,000 students who were arrested and jailed for their part in what came to be known as the Children's Crusade.
