Mr. Martin became inspired by Medgar Evers after hearing him in elementary school. Martin and his Burgland High football friends formed an NAACP youth group. Mr. Martin co-authored a treatise listing five reasons why black, brown, and red-skinned people shouldn't fight in the Vietnam War, as they had to endure Klan-inspired terrorism and were denied the right to vote. Topics discussed include Martin's civil rights involvement as a young boy; meeting Bob Moses; a student walkout; race relations in McComb prior to the civil rights movement; the murders of Herbert Lee and Louis Allen; SNCC, COFO, Marshall Ganz, Mendy Samstein, and Dennis Sweeney; Oliver Emmerich and the Enterprise-Journal; Martin and Hopson's article urging nonwhites to refuse to fight in the war in Vietnam; his spearheading of a beer boycott to restore Aylene Quin's tavern license; his work in the redistricting of Pike County; the shortage of African American male teachers; the Mississippi Institution for the Technical and Economic Resources; his personal experiences with racism; current race relations; the best result of the McComb civil rights movement; problems with illicit drugs and alcohol; Reverend Ed King; and the German ambassador in McComb.
