<dc_description>Encyclopedia article about Jackie Robinson who was the first black man to play major league baseball in the twentieth century when he debuted with the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947. He became the first black player to be named Rookie of the Year, to win the Most Valuable Player award, and to be inducted into major league baseball&apos;s Hall of Fame. Born in Cairo, Georgia, Robinson attended Pasadena Junior College and the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). Robinson was drafted into the army in 1942 and served without seeing combat duty due to an ankle injury. He later became a vice president of the Chock Full O&apos;Nuts company.</dc_description>
